About This Course
A Level English Language and Literature will be familiar to students from their study of English Language and Literature at GCSE level, with the study of literary and non-fiction written and spoken texts. 

The course also enables students to develop their creativity and expertise by producing their own original non-fiction and fiction writing. 

Students explore texts of greater variety and challenge than those encountered at GCSE and learn to apply linguistic and literary concepts and methods to their analysis of texts.

Course Content & Assessment
A Level English Language & Literature comprise of three examinations and two pieces of coursework. For the examinations, you will study an anthology of both written and spoken non-fiction extracts, a poetry collection (currently William Blake’s Songs of Innocence & Experience), a play (currently Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire), a novel (currently F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby) as well as producing your own original narratives. For the coursework, you will complete a comparative essay on two non-fiction novels (currently Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood and Dave Cullen’s Columbine) and produce your own creative non-fiction text.


What could this course lead to?
An A Level in English Language & Literature prepares students for university and entry into a diversity of professions. Some of the possible career opportunities are: Barrister, Building Surveyor, Civil Service, Estate Agent, Journalist, Personal Assistant, Press Officer, Psychologist, RAF Officer, Retail Manager, Social Worker or Teacher.
