Entry Requirements

5 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics and preferably GCSE grade 5-4 or above in Combined Science.


About This Course

The Applied Science Level 3 Extended Diploma provides you with the opportunity to apply your scientific learning and knowledge to practical and industry based scenarios. You will be assessed on the application of your learning to real world scenarios.

The qualification provides highly specialist, work related qualifications in a range of vocational contexts. For anyone who sees their future career in Science, the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is an excellent starting point. It covers a wide range of topics across Biology, Chemistry and Physics and allows you to acquire a high level of practical laboratory skills from which the theory is then drawn. Most of our students have continued their study at University.

This level 3 course will immerse you in the world of Applied Science through discovery and experimentation. Serving as a great alternative to A Levels, this course is designed specifically for those who prefer hands on experience and practical assignments to theoretical study and exams. The course is assignment based and will give you a broad scientific knowledge in Science that will get you ready for work or university.

This vocational course is very practical with plenty of opportunities to implement the theory that you learn including a residential field trip to complete a scientific investigation.  It is mainly course-work based, which means that you have a very clear understanding of your progress throughout the course, to help you plan and achieve your next steps. Taught by subject specialists, with laboratory experience, you will learn by completing laboratory-based practical assignments, supported self-directed study is essential to this course.


Course Content & Assessment

Biology – Physiology of the Human Body,  Human Regulation & Reproduction.

Physics – Astronomy & Medical Physics.

Chemistry – Laboratory Techniques & their Application & Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques.

Forensic Science – Forensic Evidence, Collection & Analysis, & Forensic Fire Investigation.

You will be assessed through our project based learning method; you will work in laboratories to the standards expected in the workplace. The course is mainly assignment based but you will be assessed in a range of ways including:

portfolio of evidence, essays/written assignments, practical demonstrations case studies, class activities/discussions, presentations and examinations.


What could this course lead to?

The majority of our students progress to university; including Nottingham, Loughborough and Surrey amongst others. Former students have studied a wide variety of degrees including Forensic Science, Microbiology, Physics and Sports and Exercise Science, For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help them find alternatives such as employment or higher level apprenticeships.
