Entry Requirements

At least 4 GCSE’s including English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 or above. Commit to an additional 8-10 hours of private study per week.

 

About This Course

The BTEC National Foundation Diploma, BTEC National Diploma and BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science are equivalent in size to 1.5, 2 or 3 A Levels respectively. It is best suited to learners who want to progress to higher education programmes in the sport and exercise science sector. The course also supports learners who choose to progress directly to employment, as the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills will give learners an advantage in applying for a range of entry level roles, training programmes and Higher Apprenticeships in areas such as sport and fitness training, coaching, and sports performance research.

 

Course Content & Assessment

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science 

(3 A Level equivalent) 13 units; 7 mandatory & 6 optional & 4 written exams.

  • Sport & Exercise Physiology
  • Functional Anatomy
  • Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology
  • Field and Laboratory-based Fitness Testing
  • Applied Research Methods in Sport & Exercise Science
  • Coaching for Performance & Fitness
  • Nutrition for Sport & Exercise Performance

Optional Units Include:

  • Sports Massage
  • Specialised Fitness Training
  • Research Project in Sport & Exercise Science
  • Physical Activity for Individual & Group Based Exercise
  • Sociocultural Issues in Sport & Exercise
  • Sports Injury & Assessment

BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science

  • (2 A Level equivalent) 8 units; 6 mandatory & 2 optional & 3 written exams.

BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science

  • (1.5 A Level equivalent) 6 units; 4 mandatory & 2 optional & 2 wrriten exams.

These courses can be taken alongside; additional A Levels.

 

What could this course lead to?

This is a useful qualification for progression onto higher education and a solid foundation for employment in many sports areas, including Teaching Sports, Coaching, Science, Fitness & Leisure Industry and Sports Therapy.  It is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses, for example: BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science, BSc (Hons) in Sport Science, BSc (Hons) in Sport and Coaching Studies.  Learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes with specific higher education providers.
